Different Types of Freelance Writing Content

There are different categories of freelance writing. If you haven’t found your niche yet, don’t worry. You can select from a multitude of content to locate the freelance writing content type that is best for you. Maybe you don’t want to stick with one, multiple types are fine. However, I wanted to share with you all of the different types in case we have any freelance writers out there that aren’t aware of the multitude of choices available to them.

This is a brief overview of the different writing types for freelancers. There is of course more information available from different sources. You may want to explore those to obtain detailed information such as freelance writing jobs tied to this content and what you can expect for income if you want to write in a particular niche for freelancer income.

Journalistic writing- you are writing content for magazines and newspapers. These articles can be on nearly any subject matter

Blogging-blogging is writing web content in date order postings. The difference between blogging and web writing is typically the tone, voice and comments are added as well as community building.

Business writing-any writing you are doing for a business can be included. You may find writing for the company employees, marketing brochures or business newsletters and emails. This particular type of freelance writing is not appealing to certain types of personalities that may find it mundane or boring. Many times there is not  a lot of room for innovation or imagination. 

Content writing-content writing is generally defined as exclusively writing articles for the internet. However, there are times when this is used in a general sense for all written content for the internet. We are referring to it here for article writing for the internet. This is much more formal in context than blogging or postings. Some define it to include things such as columns, how to steps or lists for some sites. General article information on any content can be found under this category or type of freelance writing.

Copywriting-this type of writing is tied to marketing and selling or promoting products and services. You can include in copywriting things such as brochures for information on products or services or white lists.

Technical writing-instructions are written for someone else generally for a specific field. Include writing for universities or schools under the technical freelance writing category also.

Nonfictional writing-typically you are writing memoirs, educational material or persuasive content. You can also many times include columns and many of the journalistic types of content in this category.

Fictional writing-this category is wide-ranging and includes many e-books that are written. Writers for poetry and typically included in this category. Script writing as well is included here.

Ghostwriting-any category of writing for someone else. They receive the credit for your ghost writing and could be any of these categories written by you but bylined by some other person. Ghost writing can be profitable if you dont mind someone elses name in the byline

Grant writing-writing proposals to fund a project. You may also be responsible for writing accounting information, budget as well as research and managing projects. Many grant writers must write query letters, proposal letters and completing static forms.

Speech writing-writing speeches for someone else to read to a live audience is the basic tasks for speech writers

Critical writing-these are articles reviewing a product or service.

Web writing-I am including writing content for keywords, keyword phrases and SEO (search engine optimization) in this category.
