steady stream of assignments is vital to the career of any freelance writer who wants to make writing their only source of income. Most beginning freelancers find it extremely difficult to get that steady flow, however. These tips will help you achieve more of a balance.

1. Never stop applying for work. There is a tendency among freelancers to leave off the job applications when we find a couple of clients. This is precisely what you shouldn’t do! When you finish with your clients, you’ll be left empty-handed. Then you have a gap while you struggle to find more work, then a lot of work, then nothing, and so the cycle goes.

To avoid this nasty up and down scenario, keep applying for jobs, even when you are already busy. It takes a few minutes a day and you will be able to land jobs that start after you are done with your current assignments. As you continue to do this, you will find that you end up with more and more steady work.

2. Ask clients to recommend you. Most people would never think of talking about their writer, but there is nothing wrong with asking a satisfied client if they know of anyone who would be interested in your services. You’d be surprised at how many clients you can get through simple word of mouth.

3. Get social. You can scarcely expect anyone to hire you if they don’t even know you exist, so make sure you get yourself out there. There are a number of ways to do this, but one of the best ways is to join a few social networking sites, like Twitter and Facebook, then stay nice and active on them.

Forums are another good place to hang out and find potential clients. Don’t go to the writing forums . . . few people look for writers on forums for writers. Instead, check out places where your target market hangs out and then make yourself known!

Another great way to get your name out as a quality writer is to write for article directories. People will see your top quality articles and can click on the link in your bio to see your website or contact you.

Freelance writing can be an excellent way to earn some extra cash, but if you want to ensure that you don’t fall prey to the vicious cycle that many writers face, you’ll need steady clients. The tips here will help you keep a constant flow of work going.
